Seed Production and Variety Development for Organic Systems:
By Katherine L. Adam (NCAT Agriculture Specialist,© NCAT 2005 ATTRA Publication #IP272/273).

Abstract: Most of the research to develop seed varieties specifically for organic production is in public and participatory breeding, and good technical material from such research is increasingly available. The USDA has also funded workshops to teach farmers the principles of participatory breeding for organics, to increase the availability of organic seed. In 2005, however, although there are breeding programs underway, no seed varieties bred specifically for organic production are commercially available

Restoring our Seed: Restoring our Seed is a USDA-SARE project working with farmers in Maine and beyond to learn more about seed saving, seed production, and on-farm breeding and selection. There is information on on-farm breeding materials. You can request seed for breeding. Also, on-line instruction is given for potato breeding (from seed) and cucumber breeding.
Save our Seed: Save our Seed is a USDA-SARE project working with Southeast farmers and extension agents in the production of organic and heirloom seed. Their on-line information is primarily geared toward seed production rather than breeding.
Organic Seed Alliance: The Organic Seed Alliance is a non-profit organization based in Washington State that supports the ethical development and stewardship of the genetic resources of agricultural seed. They accomplish their goals through collaborative education and research programs with organic farmers and other seed professionals. They do many educational workshops related to on-farm breeding and seed selection.
NPSAS On-Farm Breeding Project: The Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society is a grassroots educational organization committed to the development of a sustainable society through the promotion of ecologically and socially sound food production and distribution systems in the Northern Plains. They have a farm breeding club that brings farmers together to share knowledge and seed stock for seedsaving and breeding.
Kokopelli Seed Foundation: Kokopelli Seed foundation was recently created in December of 2003 by Dominique Guillet to sow in the heart of the people of North America the seed-message of Association Kokopelli in Europe: access to open-pollinated seeds is the only way to alleviate hunger and to promote, in a sustainable way, food security. An excellent new book is The Seeds of Kokopelli: A manual for the production of seeds and a directory of heritage seeds. A good list of seed saving/preservation organizations is also listed.
