New Publicly Bred Varieties Being Offered By Seed Companies

Bush Acorn Squash:

Turtle Tree Seeds, a biodynamic seed company based in Copake, NY will be licensing an OP powdery mildew resistant bush acorn squash from the Dept. of Plant Breeding at Cornell University. This variety does not have the gene for skin ripening which causes the outside of the fruit to turn dark green before it’s ready to harvest. With this gene, fruits can be harvested when the market price is high, as the fruit will appear ripe. However, these fruits can easily have less sugar and flavor as they are harvested too early. The Cornell version does NOT have this gene. Thus, when it turns dark green it is truly ready to harvest.
