These varieties have been bred under conventional conditions, so we
expected to see differences in their performance under organic conditions.
Again, the hope is that promising varieties will be commercialized by
small, regional seed companies, thus making them available to farmers.
This summary is intended to provide a brief picture of what performed
well and what did not. |
Green Zucchini: Overall the zucchini was deemed too short and thick, lower yielding, and had only average flavor. But two growers preferred it for its compact plant shape and said it had superior taste to varieties like Black Beauty. |
|
Yellow Straight Neck: The PMR yellow straight neck was much better received than the zucchini.
There was much less wilt and powdery mildew than standard comparisons.
Although most said the taste was the same as their standards, the quality
and yield were better. Growers described them as very uniform and visually
attractive. |

Caserta: This PMR striped zucchini was only grown by one grower and reported
as having good taste, beautiful fruit, and was an amazing producer. |
