These varieties have been bred under conventional conditions, so we
expected to see differences in their performance under organic conditions.
Again, the hope is that promising varieties will be commercialized by
small, regional seed companies, thus making them available to farmers.
This summary is intended to provide a brief picture of what performed
well and what did not. |
Bush Delicata OP: This PMR squash is similar to the heirloom Delicata but has a compact bush structure instead of a vine. Trialers found it to have good disease resistance but still got some powdery mildew. The taste and quality were the same as Delicata with yield being as good or better. The compact structure was preferred. |
|
PMR Bush Acorn OP: Bush acorn is a dark green PMR acorn with a bush plant like Bush Delicata. Growers were unanimous in saying that this variety performed the same as comparable varieties like Table Ace and Burbee’s Early. |
|
Bugle Butternut: This variety is very similar to Waltham but fruits are about 1/2 pound smaller. All the growers that grew it found that it was noticeably smaller than Waltham. This was fine with some growers but not acceptable with others. Taste, quality, and yield were all similar to Waltham.
